I just got an RNC, and I'm not sure how to set it up. The manual explicitly says you can't use it in a balanced signal path with TRS connectors. You must "unbalance" the signal first.
My plan was to use it in the balanced insert loop on my PreSonus MP20 pre. The outs (balanced) of the MP20 then go into the inserts on my mixer in order to bypass the mixer's pres.
I suppose I could run the RNC after the MP20 (instead of in the loop), but then how do I "unbalance" the signal? Right now I have no problem running the balanced output of the MP20 through a TRS cable into my mixer insert. If I plugin halfway or all the way, it makes no difference.
Any opinions/experience?
Thanks,
Tyler

I'm sure you're right; since I got the MP20 (recently), I've only recorded two sources at once, both through the MP20. Hence, I never noticed the phase difference. I will correct that.
However, I thought the benefit to running the RNC in the pre's loop was so that I could make adjustments on the pre without having to reset the threshold on the comp. However, the MP20 doesn't have input and output controls, just a single gain control.
So what's the point of a balanced insert loop on the MP20. Why include it and not run everything in line after the pre?
BTW, I'm thinking of swapping the RNC for something with balanced I/O, as I don't want to deal with -10/+4 issues (I'm not too concerned about noise issues). I've heard others have had problems. What do you think about switching for the presonus ACP-22 compressor? It can go dual mono, and has gate functionality and balanced I/O w/switchable -10/+4. Or maybe even a DBX 166xl? Are these inferior sonically to the RNC?
I plan on using it only for tracking instruments, not any program material. Mostly voice, acoustic guitar.
Thanks for the input,
Tyler

It does make a difference actually.
The phase of the signal will change.
You'll be flipping the signal 180 degrees when you have it halfway out.
Avoid the loop....you'll go looopy :D
Pre to RNC to Desk.
TRS should be fine.....halfway out for proper phase.Remember it's '+' on the tip and the desk insert input is actually sleeve...that's why.
