Ok, so I am looking to buy a pair of mics to use as drum overheads, and I don't want to spend more than $300. Up until this point, I have been using either sm58's as overheads, or an MXL large diaphragm condenser borrowed from a friend. I was originally looking for a pair of SDC's, but anything cheaper than RODE NT5's seemed to get mediocre reviews at best. I checked out the HM-1 after hearing about it on this site, and they seem like good mics, but everything I read says that they are not a go-to mic for all applications. Has anyone used these as overheads? Or is there something better for the money out there.

As a guitar amp mic I think this mic excells. I DO use it as a second mic there also....usually with an old SM57 or even an ADK A51 LDC.
Its very 'forward' without being too bright.
Two would be great overheads.

My HM-1s have exactly one application: drum overheads. And in my budget, they excel over everything else I own. I should mention, however, that I'm not usually a fan of pencil-type SDCs as overheads, or of unnaturally bright drums.
But this is the only thing I love them on. Occasionally they work well for boxy-sounding acoustic guitars, but I almost never favor them for guitar amps or vocals.
