Looking to buy a second hand Powermac G5 because my current system (a pc) is dying of age. I don't need to have the fastest of the fastest, and I don't have the budget for it, so I'm not really into the latest line of Mac Pro's. However, I want a solid system on which I can run PT 7.x with a Digi002 interface for a couple of years to come. I do mostly (rock)music productions so the use of many tracks and plugins is required. What would you recommend? Right now I'm looking at a dual 2.5 or 2.7 Ghz with 4 Gb memory. Will that be sufficient? These are about half to a third (!) of the price of a second hand Mac Pro with Intel processors.

Thanks.

Not sure a used G5 is the best solution, you will be locked into the current OS and maybe PTLE version.

The next version of OSX will be Intel only.

CPU wise it would be better to get a Mini, Macbook pro, or iMac.

They are all more powerful than the last Dual G5 Powermacs released.

I'm currently using an old core duo Mini with Logic, sessions of 32-48 tracks.
CPU rarely goes beyond 35%.

The current Core2Duo machines are 20-30% more powerful than my machine.
