Hi,
I am really intrigued with something. My band is starting to make some money (not lots, but enough) and we've never really talked finance. (no agent or anything involved) How do we split the money? The singer and I write the music, i was the producer and engineer for our album (which is what we're getting money from) and I have spent all the money to invest in a studio to record for "free" the whole band. How should we split the money? How do you guys do it? If we each get a quarter (4 piece band), I don't really get the recognition for the studio, the mix and master of everything and the songwriting (the singer should be included in the songwriting process). Is it normal I feel that way. In my head, it really makes no sense that our bassist which is basically playing what I tell him to play gets as much money out of our CD sales. You get my point? How do you do it?
:? Cheers

Gigs should be split evenly minus expenses. You should discuss with the other members of the band exactly what falls under the heading of expenses.

If you produce a CD, .07 cents per song, per unit goes to the songwriter(s). Any additional return should be use first to recoupe any production expenses.. Studio, mastering and art & CD duplication. After that, devide the balance between the band.

I recommend that this all be worked out before anything happens. It's always harder to get a deal closed after the fact ...

I worked it out this way...... I play drums in a band. I also recorded and co produced the record. What we did was figured out a reasonable budget and split that cost evenly between all the members . so I paid an equal share as everybody else. ie if the budget was $4000 and 4 band members you receive $3000 and everyone has an equal share of cost. The reality is you will still put in more because of your time and wanting it to be the best it can be but at least it is being split up in some fashion. As far as recuping then split it equally until you make your investment back (you should be receiving payment also ) Then figure out how the money should be split from there.

Work this out soon ....it could become a big problem

Thanks a lot guys...
It helps a lot. The 0,07$ seems low at first but when I calculated it...it seems pretty fair. What we're gonna do first is pay back the CD costs, then, 2000$ will go to me to pay back a part of the studio and the mix time, and then, we'll have to figure out the rest...probably gonna use the 0,07$ for the songwriting process and then split the rest equally....wont be much left though
This helped a lot...thank you
