I am new to this game and any info regarding this would be appreciated. I have a Yamaha emx 5000 12 mixer with in and out recording and playback on a Tascam CD-rw750. what are the requirements for my laptop ( maybe bypass the crummy sound card in it) to receive multi tracks from my mixer (via a edirol ua-25 or equiv interface) back out to the recorder? I want to lay-down a track, playback that track and layer each track (multitrack). Also, what software would be best for editing that would work here?

There are many many good options available. But at the risk of sounding like an audio snob, I would recomend you do some research on methods of recording before you start spending your money. If you have a better knowledge base to work from, you might better understand the suggestions people here give you.
