i've had this problem with every computer i've tried so far, with every DAW and every sound card i have. whenever i try to record, through either line-in or mic, this distorted sound appears more or less randomly every 1-3 minutes, and usually makes the recording skip. if anyone knows what this is/how to get rid of it, i would be very grateful.

It sounds like when you have bitcrusher on really high. It's almost as if the recording goes from bitcrusher setting 16 bits to 4 bits or so temporarily. Anything that is capable of doing that... and isn't the computer... it's gotta be the interface. I know you said different sound cards, but does that include 'external' sound cards as well?

That's most likely a dry joint, or maybe a bad wiping contact on a plug/socket.

What's in common between all your trials with different soundcards and different DAWs? Could it be your guitar or lead?

It only sounds to me like you may be overloading a cheap sound card? Otherwise you may have buffer issues, paging file issues. Chrome plated connectors instead of goldplated connectors. Try recording at a lower level. Guitar plugged directly into a cheap soundcard microphone input with direct current on it to power cheap multimedia headset microphones. That DC would cause that kind of problem without even showing up as an offset. You cannot use the microphone input on cheap soundcards for anything other than multimedia microphones that require five volts DC. And that's what I'm hearing.

Can you scratch my back was that?
