Hi all,

I'm new here, just discovered this place!

Here's my situation:
I recorded a stereo file through my new USBPre into Peak...
but what I did was to send all the vocal channels into the left side, and all the instruments into the right side. I did this so that I could atleast have some freedom to edit the vox and band independently, and to get the balance right before mixing them down together.

Essentially all I'd like to do now is combine the L & R together, but can't figure out any way to do this in Peak.

Peak has a "Mix" function where you can copy clipboard contents to the selection, but it won't let you select just the L or just the R, you need to do it in stereo.
There's are also "Stereo to Mono" and "Mono to Stereo" functions, but they don't seem to do anything...perhaps I am not using them correctly.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions that may help!

hmm...

i am a long year peak user, but have to admit that i never came across a similar situation, so don't really know in peak.

but what i would do is using an app like pro tools or logic (me is logic)
create stereo split files there (proo tools will do that automatically as soon as you load the interleaved file) and mix it down again, just create four tracks, two of each, and then pan, edit them to your like, and bounce down as interleaved again.

Thanks for the suggestions...

I've gotten close to the results i'm looking for by editing each side (L and R), and then using the "stereo to mono" function...

then take the mono file and go "mono to stereo" just to have a normal stereo track.

this is far from ideal though...
I'm not sure exactly what I lose when I go to mono, but there seems to be some audible differences.

I think bringing them into Protools would be the best solution.

I have Logic Express, but have yet to really learn it.

This is a live performance recording, and unfortunately I am limited to two tracks...but I have several more performances to figure out how to get the best results!

logic is da bomb 8-) , even express is cool, import the interleaved stero file, then convert to split stereo, i would copy each track, you said left is vocs and right is instruments or vice versa, right??
so, that you have two mono of each basically, then you can edit them and pan them, to create a bit more room "pseudo stereo" bounce down as interleaved stereo...

Just an update on my recordings...

I was running the Sound Devices USBPre into my Powerbook 1.67 at 24/48 into Peak...

It worked flawlessly! I had read a past post by someone bashing the USBPre, but it is a little tank, and is really a flexible box.

I sent signal out of a Yamaha DM1000 console as coax sp/dif into the USBPre w/vocals on one channel and instruments on the other...this gave me some flexibility to do some editing later on.

I ended up importing into ProTools, and then split into mono tracks before editing and then bouncing back out...this worked out really well.

Now that my project is complete, I'm contemplating selling the USBPre since I don't really want to let it gather dust...anyone interested? drop me a line.

(still haven't sat down with logic yet...someday soon! :D )
