Hi everybody,

I'd just like your 2 cents when it comes to a portable DAW running Cubase 5 (for now, but I might consider upgrading sometime soon if I feel the need to). By portable, I mean it should be laptop-based. I'm considering sticking with a laptop running Windows for now however, considering I do things OTHER than music production (part-time, work-related stuff for income) and need to keep this in mind (the fact that a laptop running Windows might be better suited towards this than a Macbook running OS X). I also might want to play the odd game or 2, so I think that should also have to be kept int mind (I hope this won't clash with its use for sound however).

Regarding what I'll be doing, for starters, I'll mainly just be recording, editing and mixing guitars for the time being (hobbyist). IDEALLY, I'd like for this system to be quite FLEXIBLE however (in case I need to do work (whether paid or unpaid) of various kinds; basically anything 'sound', portable and non-portable). So I should be able to expand upon the "only being used for guitar recordings for now", possibly in the near future.

I know there are couple of threads that have dealt with this question in the past, but I'm not always sure they're concurrent with the latest technology that is out there at the time of this writing.

Any advice perhaps? Or articles? Recommendations?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

P.S. I'm from South Africa BTW! Shipment would have to be taken into account regarding my poll (if I decide to order from any of the 3).

Thanks!

Cubase is a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), so it's not clear whether you are asking for suggestions for other DAWs (software), or about the sort of laptop computer plus audio interface you should consider to run it with (hardware).

If it's hardware, how many input channels would you need? What sort of monitoring facilities (loudspeakers and room) do you have? What sort of budget (e.g. in US $) are you looking to spend?

Hello Juan,

Did you know any DAW is portable?? Because its software based my friend  I think you mean an audio interface. There are many to choose from with different prices. Do want a portable one check out this page: http://getinstrumental.com/best-low-budget-usb-audio-interface-for-recording/
And if you are searching for a new DAW check this article: http://getinstrumental.com/best-daw-music-production-software-for-recording/

Some audio interfaces come in combination with a free digital audio workstation.

Greetings

Harry - just a quick head's up... the OP (Juan) posted this back in September, and never did reply to the questions that Boswell asked him, so I doubt he's going to see your answer; as he's only ever posted just this one time and then vanished.

I'm not attempting to stop you from answering any post you are interested in - by all means, feel free; even if Juan isn't around anymore, these posts are visible to anyone who might be doing an internet search on a similar topic, so while you probably aren't helping Juan, LOL, you might be helping somebody.

I would suggest that it can be helpful to keep an eye out for the date(s) of the last post on any given thread, though.
RO has been around a very long time, and some of these threads - which can often appear as newer to new members - can have last-known reply dates that are 2, 3, 5, even ten years old, (or sometimes even older).

Though again, please understand that I'm not waiving you off from contributing to whatever thread you'd like; if you feel you can contribute something positive or helpful to an older thread/topic, then by all means, please do so. ;)

BTW, welcome to R.O. :)

Hello Donny,

I'm sorry but I overlooked. I thought this was a new thread. It won't happen again.. And tell mister Brien Holster I am a real member. Everyone can make mistakes right?

Personally, I never mind a member posting in older threads. I actually think its excellent SEO and community support. Maybe not so much this particular thread but I appreciate seeing people return years later to update these old threads.
so I say... carry on and post in any thread as far back as we go. I have been making it a point to do this when the right one comes by my path.
