Hi Narf. If you just want to record the audio of the keyboard, it sounds like you probably need a standard 1/4" TRS to 1/8" TRS adaptor. These often come with a set of headphones. If not, radio shack will have one. Then run an 1/8" stereo cord to your mic input on the soundcard. I am making assumptions here but guessing based on your post. If you want to record midi data, that's whole other can of worms. Let me know if this helps and if you need more info on midi, I can help you from there.

Is your "Big Jack" marked "Assignable Output"? It's for a sustain pedal and other functions. It doesn't put out any audio.

If you are connecting into a headphone jack on your keyboard you should plug a stereo TRS plug into the keyboard, that splits to 2 mono TS plugs on the other end of the cable -if you want the left and right channels to both work.

No, a MIDI cable isn't audio.

Generally speaking, MIDI is just Note On / Note Off data. It doesn't transmit any sounds, just which keys you played and how long you held them. In more advanced keyboards that are touch sensitive and velocity sensitive MIDI transmits how hard you played each note, how quickly you played each note - plus any other performance parameters like pitch-bend and mod wheel data.

MIDI lets you use your keys to trigger outboard synth modules, samplers, soft-synth plug-ins, drum machines etc.

And in some keyboards you can use MIDI to backup your programmed sounds and/or load new sounds.

Thanks guys, the two big jacks on the back say "Assignable Jack" and "Phone Output" would either transmit audio?

Phone output will, but plugging that into anything will cause
(1) slightly degraded sound - perhaps even bad tone/pitch
(2) distortion (mainly because the phone output is designed to be louder than inputs are used to)
