a fast solution might be to use ear buds or headphones with a volume control built into the lead

yes a resistive divider or stereo analog potentiometer is a solution
but this will require soldering and instruction

Thanks. Yep, no volume control independent of line output. I live in UK - just seen that at maplin (our radioshack equiv) they have headphone extension cables with volume controls in em. That should do, but it's not very audiophile! Thanks
