I'm looking for a sound card that I can use mainly for some simple home recording with my PC and transferring my LPs to CDs and MP3s. One of my friends recommended the M-Audio Audiophile 2496, which seems like it would be a good fit. But I'm wondering if I could use it for both a desktop and a laptop. If not, can anyone recommend an alternative? I'm not looking for anything fancy. Thanks.

That's a PCI card, it would work fine in a desktop, but you can't throw it in a laptop.

If you want mobility you're looking for a 2ch USB or FW box.

For simple 2ch line inputs you want something along the lines of the .
If you want two mic/lines or more look at the bigger M-Audio or Presonus boxes.

BTW, you'll need an RIAA preamp between the turntable and the CPU.

[="http://www.blazeaudio.com/products/recordtocd.html"]This site[/]="http://www.blazeaud…"]This site[/] has a wide range of software and hardware related to vinyl/CD trawnsfers, mainly at the lower cost end. I can't attest to the quality but, for the price, they might be worth a try. There are also some good software options to removing crackles, noise, etc. at [ this site[/]="http://xserve1.bias…"] this site[/]
