Hey RO'ers, I was wondering on behalf of myself and some of the artists that I work with, on how we can go about submitting our music for consideration on opening shows for mainstream artists? Does anyone have any concrete suggestions that they would recommend? We have just finished up our latest release, and we are in the promotion stage (locally), but we would like to be able to get more exposure for our music by doing shows. Who should we try to contact to be considered? We are a hip hop /rap group and we have gotten good reviews about our album locally, but we are still looking to gain more exposure and interest in our music. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

OK! Here is my take on how to improve your band's exposure, for free!!!
Now we all know that children around the world are illegally downloading music for free via the "peer to peer" file sharing networks, as they look for their favorite bands and songs.
This is really a wonderful opportunity for you! Why? You simply choose the name and title of what all of the kids are downloading today, instead of posting it under your actual band's name. You then should record a nice little verbal introduction indicating to the children that this may not be who they think it is and you hope they enjoy your efforts? You will then place your band in lieu of their illegal ill-gotten gains. Never mind about the original bands namesake, since the children should not be downloading them anyhow. Your band will quickly become the talk of the Internet! Riding on the illegal backside of a popular band! Fast easy and effective!

You just get one of those programs (Kazaa Lite, Limewire, etc.), and name the file "appropriately" (hehe), put it in the shared folder, and when the fans download, they will get your advertisement!

I have given this some more thought......many times I have been told that a good bulk of the Internet traffic is based around pornography? Much of which passes through the peer to peer file sharing programs. So my earlier suggestion is still sound, if you know what I mean? You might be able to appeal to an even larger audience if you were to create a graphic, photo album or video to go with your soundtrack and encode that as an MPEG video file. You could then title it something like "Big Titty Woman plays guitar"? I think you would get tens of thousands of downloads that way?? And you would have no complaints from any pop stars.
Can I play the fat girl for the porno part??

Thanks my fellow RO'ers I will try both. But since I don't download porn I wouldn't know what to name my files. But hey if 70% of P2P sharing is about downloading porn than why not give them some good, quality hip-hop music instead :) Thanks again.

The people holding the purse strings include the local promoters.
Belkin, the House of Blues management, etc.
If you made a nice package of several of your artists' press kits, and sent it to their contact address, you might get some hits.
I am going to give away one of my secrets: put a contract in the package, and send it via FedEx. Write "Important: contract enclosed" on the outside. Guaranteed it won't go into the trash. Of course, this contract isn't going to be the final draft.
The nice press kits and introduction letter from you do the rest.
