I keep reading about points in the music business forum. What are they? IS it simply a % of the final profits made of the CD. If the producer gets around 14 to 15 points, does it mean 14% to 15%? Just wondering... :roll:

Yes ... points are pecentage points ...

A producer will take their percentage from the artists share of disbursments or advances... If the artist gets a deal providing 20% of the SLRP (suggested list reatil price, that's a great deal btw) the Producers cut will be 14% of that 20 % ...

A normal producer royalty is around 3 - 4 % of PPD (published price to dealer). On what basis you calculate the royalties depends on whether you are in the US or in Europe (generally speaking).

Of course a percentage doesn't mean anything. What's the starting point, what are the deductions, etc.

Usually there's a fee which is non-recoupable, then there could be an advance on the royalties.

Another option is a break-even scheme, which is like a profit share. Lots of choices, one way or the other you'll get screwed, so do yourself the favour of reading Donald S. Passman's book on the music industry first.

This topic is finally clearing up a few things for me. I'd also like to know what a typical artist royalty is (at least for a new, un-established artist). And does their points (percentage) apply to the SLRP?

Also whats a producer's cut per song on an album. IF they only worked on one or two of the songs.
