hiya chaps & chappesses,
does anyone have any ideas about a good budget condenser mic for classical guitar? there are such a lot around i feel a bit swamped. is a large diaphram always better than a small one for acoustic instruments? i'm wanting something to pick up all the delicacy, warmth & natural sustain. any trustworthy brands come recommended? feel free to venture opinions..

As a schooled classical guitarist and audio engineer, I have never cared for a LDC mic on my recordings. I don't know what your budget is, but there are a couple of SDC's I can recommend, depending on your budget. On the low side, a Shure SM81 provides decent detail , a slight amount of top end "sheen", and controlled bass end extension.
For a bit more, the Earthworks QTC30 has worked well for me. This mic does require a "better" recording environment, in that it is a very sensitive omni.
If your budget will permit you to do so, the DPA 4011 or the 4015 will really yield great results. Once again, your audio environment will determine the best choice. The 4011 has a "tighter" cardioid pattern, so that the room is less influential on the outcome. I have heard that the 4006 and the 4041 (all DPA) do well, but I haven't used them. The 4011 has served myself and fellow students in a decent hall at our local fine arts college. We use a pair of them with a Grace 201 preamp. That rig works well with LOTS of other acoustic instruments in that scenario. I have been recording recitals there for over 20 years, and the DPAs have delivered the goods like no other mic has.
