Instead of going the vp88 or AT825/835ST route, are there any matched pair M-S mic combos with a minimum of 40-20khz FR with a low noise floor, all in a small diaphram package for around lets say $250usd a piece? (cardioid + Fig 8 combo)

I don't know how they are, but the AKG Blueline series has interchangeable capsules and they have a fig 8 option. I've seen the 391's go on ebay for $250 new - buy two of those and then a fig 8 capsule and you'd be ready to go. The fig 8 capsule goes for a bit more. If you look used, you might be able to go a bit lower.

Other SD fig 8 mics I know of are the sennheiser mkh-something, and the Schoeps system - these are a lot more.

I don't see any reason to get a "matched" pair when doing M/S recordings, as this is not a true stereo field. Can't really match a fig. 8 to a cardioide anyway. Just use what gives you the best direct/ambient sound.

Sorry I obviosly meant 'match wise' as far as tone and frequency responce, not polar patterns. Just tried and proven pairs...
