Has anyoone heard or checked out their Mic upgrade kits? Basically, you take a low end mic and change the guts out and they produce a mic comparable to a high end Neumann mic for a lot less money. You have to do the soldering and labor, but is it worth it ? They got some great reviews.

Not me ace... I try to not fuck with soldering irons unless absolutely no alternative exists... in my particular case, there are plenty [and I do mean p-l-e-n-t-y!!] of alternatives to building a new amplifier for an $8- mic in the attempt to get a $15- result.

I have heard that it comes out quite well if you happen to get a Marshall mic with a decent capsule... of course if you don't happen to get one with a decent capsule you're kinda wasting your time... but at least you'll get some experience building stuff.

Peace.

Although I haven't bought anything from Dave I do think this is an option for those that DO want to heat up a soldering iron and have a go.

It may just give you the confidence to venture further than kits and source and pick and choose your own capsules.

Do not do this just to save money because ... It won't in the long run.

That's "Stayne" from Innertube Audio... the same company that makes what I consider to be one of the absolute coolest compressors on the planet, the "Atomic Squeeze Box".

They're going to have a booth at AES and will be giving away an Atomic Squeeze Box. I don't know the booth number and I don't know the details of the giveaway, I just know that if you're going to AES it would be in your absolute best interest to enter their contest.

Peace.

As far as Kurts comments, I have found the ADK mics to be much more even in their quality and performance than most of the other Chinese capsulated mics, excluding SP which I think are probably the best QC of em all....Having said that, the service for ADK's is incredibly good...they really dont want you to get a bum mic with their name on it...As for the upgrades and the kits....go for it!

Wow... Larry sent me a bunch of ADK mics to play with a few years ago, including a "matched pair". If that pair was "matched" then I'm Mary Queen of Scots.

A couple of the mics he sent out sounded OK, a couple of the mics he sent out sounded like complete ass... and within the "matched pair", one sounded pretty good and the other was an attrocicity.

Fletcher...sorry to hear that....a 'few years' can make some difference I suppose and my experience is only a couple...not trying to claim anything but what I know about...maybe you should try out some of the new stuff..Vienna,new TL series..Hemi's....you could be surprised but then again maybe not....as you say...ymmv

I haven't tried the Rode...

Last time I talked to Larry [ADK] I mentioned that anytime he wanted to send out stuff for us to try I'd be more than happy to run it around the block [which was what happened when he sent the first batch of mics over].

I'll be damned if I'm going to go out and buy a bunch of mics to give them a shot, especially when I didn't dig them on first listen... but I do buy mics all the time when they've been sent over and I have found them to be a useful tool.

I have a couple of Groove Tubes GT-44's that are regular staple around our joint. We don't pimp them, but we use them. The Groove Tubes people sent them over for us to check out and we dug them... then they gave the distribution to "M-Audio" [a company with whom we have no relationship], and now the distribution is entirely controlled by GC so we have no access to the product.

Still love the damn things.

If Larry thinks he has something that might work for us... I welcome the opportunity to give them a go... until then, I can only speak from my most recent experience.

Fletcher....Agree that you shouldnt ever have to buy something just to try it out...I'm not a pimp for Larry or any other manufacturer just a slob like one of us thats giving out my own experiences as well...If I talk to them guys anytime soon I'll relay your take on it as well as mention that you would certainly give em another thrashing to see how they work these days...I guess I've been a lucky one as my units have functioned well...I do have to own up to this, the LD's I got worked well and sounded good(no comparisons to german stuff) but after about a year or so the preamp board in em went south...or north...I couldnt tell it just started having problems...seems there was a problem with some farmed out component....anyway...they sent me new boards no questions and the sent a newer improved design to boot....NOW the bastardized versions sound really good...so I'm happy...peace to ya....
