Say I had an older outboard effect that I really wanted to use with Sonar.
Is it possible to use a Sonar AUX send, assign it to a 1/4" out on my sound card, have it run through my outboard effect, then feed it back into on of my 1/4" ins?
I am thinking that I could either bring it back in on another channel or (better yet) I could bring it back into the aux that I used to send it.
I know I could use the effect before I bring it into my pres, but I would prefer recording the dry track and applying the effect afterwards.
I also am aware that Sonar has many effects available, and I am willing to expore them also, I just want to know if anyone has successfully done what I describe above.

You can do what you describe, but there are problems and limitations. The main one being a latency delay. So any tracks sent out and back will not be in sync with the other tracks. For some types of tracks and with a fast computer, this may not be an insurmountable problem.
I urge you to explore software effects, which have many advantages over hardware - cleaner, total recall of settings, use the same effect on many different tracks, lets you mix by bouncing within your DAW instead of having to play the song in real time and record it, and more.
