hi...i use 2 hard drives one wd40jb for op and one wd80jb for data...the first one is it partitioned in 2 partitions... first partition for op and the second for sampl.Wavesetc. i have a question:do i really need to put the first hard on IDE1 master and second on IDE2 master?...because they are right now first IDE1 master and second one on IDE1 slave. i would like to put them on masters but my case is ANTEC PLUS 1080 and the ribbon cables don't let me do that...and there is a distance between hards bays and CD roms bay...
i hope you've understood that...and you'll give me some help...

Well, the best way to do this is always have the second hard drive on the secondary controller as master.

It's best to keep it off of the primary bus with the OS drive so that it has it's own bandwidth.

I recommend always having the OS drive as the master and then use the optical drive(any CDROM device) as a slave to it.

700mgz AMD, 383ram, delta44, 16mg videoram, VIA chipset...

I have both my HDD set up as Opus describes and it has been running fine recording 2 tracks of digital audio simutaneously, and editing up to 32 tracks...

I heard some make mention of the fact that if you put a 'slower' device (a cd drive) on the same IDE channel as a faster device (a hdd), then it will slow the faster device down.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I've done testing on that theory and shot it down very quickly as it does not slow it down.

That is an old school fact and does not pertain to current technology.

Having done several benchmarking tests on CDROM devices attached to the same chain as Hard drives and also hardd drives by themselves I did not see any system lag due to it!
