Lets have some fun..

I'll post two clips of acoustic guitar. They will be 2 different takes with the same mic placement but different mics. You pick which mic/clip you like the SOUND of better. Our first contender will be called Mic A and our second contender will be Mic B. (Come on people..i don't want brand names to throw you off so the actual mics will remain anonymous for now. )

Diclaimer: I am not playing the guitar and he isn't very good but we are discussing sound quality so it really doesnt matter.

The MP3s are 320 kbps so dont be pulling the "its an MP3 so I can't tell the difference line"

Mic B [url]http://www.jetrecording.com/micb.mp3">http://www.jetrecording.com/micb.mp3] [url]http://www.jetrecording.com/micb.mp3

Choose mic a or b and add why.

dang that's a toughy. They sound so different. I think A is more pleasant to listen to, but duller. B is way honky, but might stick out in a mix better. I fear no mids more than honky mids, so I'm gonna have to go with B. But it dang well better sound good on some other source if I was to choose it to buy.

If I was going to guess, I would say that A was an SM81, and B was like a cheaper Audiotechnica, or a HM-1 or something

I'll play...

Mic A....The lows are way out of proportion for the level of the track.

Mic B...The mid-range is kinda standing around the fabled 500hz honk.

The mic A will sound much better with the roll-off ingaged....if there is one.

Mic B will sound better unplugged. Perhaps thats too much opinion....err...perhaps if it was EQ'd a touch. I liked the lowend on mic B but the lowmid honk seems better suited for an electric guitar.

I will say that the guitar is partially the offending piece, perhaps more-so than either mic.

Neither is an Audio Technica mic.....just a guess.

I like the first one best. It sounds clearer.

The second one sound.....pushy. The first 4 notes of it sounded like they came from a ukelele.

I don't know if they are accurate, but the MP3 tag for mica shows SM-81 and HM-1 for micb. You may not want to put the mic name in the MP3 tags.

i have a question. what's the point of this shoot out? given the right circumstances either of these mics could be used to record acoustic guitar. with this player, mic a moved further up the neck and possible cutting the lows would be a better choice. With a better guitar player in a nicer room mic b may be better, or maybe still mic a....

...seems like a pretty useless shootout to me, with no real point.
