I am looking to build a professional sounding studio around my quad core DAW intel 9550 / PC. I have been on the lookout for a suitable mixer having been advised from several people despite current trends of going mixerless, mixers are the way to go. However as I have been asking around I have also been told firewire is actually slower than interfacing with pci socket. Now to beat all this a guy from funky Junk, not Mark the other dude has advised me dont focus on a mixer get a Prism Orpheus. he said they were the best of the best, although I have come across reviews that are a bit more half hearted and that perhaps other makes of this kind of thing would be better such as mytek 8x192 ad converter and using seperate pres. If anyone has any information on these higher end audio interfaces could they share some light on them as this appears to be a serious way to build a serious sounding studio? Can't help feeling a bit strange without a mixer though the real faders you can move with both hands, the trad format for adding on quality hardware, I just am so confsed!

You have to mix other people's opinions in the same way you would mix a multitrack recording. Some of them you give reasonable levels to and some you bring up so you can only just hear them. You are the vocals in the centre, and only you can be the judge of how you want the result to sound.
Before saying brand X is better than brand Y, you first have to resolve the question of using an external mixer or mixing in the box. Don't forget that you can use a control surface with real sliders and knobs to control your DAW mixer.
Others on this board will doubtless advise you as well, but once you have that decision made, come back here for opinions on the various brands of hardware to implement your chosen way of working.
