Hi all: AudioKid, PCRecord, Makzimia, etc. Haven't been on since early '16. Last I was here I was mastering Makzimia's material, analog, along with AudioKid (who was doing the same, digitally) and we had a big COMPETITION GOING! :ROFLMAO:

Suffice to say, Makzimia found mine to be "warmer"! Well, I'm back for my trophy. (y)

Anyway, on a serious note hope all is well. AudioKid what is your gear status? Last I remember you were purging your hardware and going 100% ITB (Mastering too!).

I've been blessed to have acquired some fine mastering gear and software over the years, mostly for my own pleasure and research.
I've never considered myself a ME but I use mastering gear to track and mix /play around with. Other than a few special products, I've found the mass of whats considered to be the "go to" "hybrid gear" which can be used for both OTB mixing and mastering to be a complete waste of time and money, but very fun to play with regardless of the expense.

After 20 years of reading recording forums, gathering the gear most talked about, experimenting with it all without bias... I am 100% convinced most everything done OTB (today) degrades the audio negativity. Once you understand what a particular product is really doing, I believe we ca emulate a lot of (what it does right) free within most DAW's. ITB mixing is better to what most analog hybrid summing gear ever accomplishes, OTB. (note, I am not talking about tracking with analog)
My point here... and isn't it a wonderful thing to know we really do not need to be investing is much other than a good DAW for mixing and mastering :) analog OTB mixing and summing is a gimmick based around products shifting stereo tracks to fool us into thinking something sounds wider or smoother.
And most likely the biggest culprit to user reviews is based around the trusting support of purchase always wanting us to believe we've made the right choice.

But... I still believe 2 DAW's are better than one and its always fun putting a mix through a Bricasti and using a few MEQ 5 Pultec EQ's and hearing praise from musicians after.

My conclusion....

  • Good converters , interfacing, stable power and room acoustics (treatment) are essential,

  • the best independent Monitor Controller you can get the better,
  • a mono button and having at least one mixcube is very important
  • all the best analog gear you can get your hands on "for tracking" the better,
  • hybrid mixing is a waste of money but really fun
  • two DAW's work better than one. :)
  • Samplitude and Sequoia are great DAW programs,
  • once ITB stay ITB, but there are exceptions
  • real Pultec EQ's and LA-2A are special
  • Bricasti's are nice to have, especially if you use 2 DAW's
  • digital audio is amazing and only getting better.
  • if I had it to do all over again, I'd likely do it all exactly the same.

Thanks for that, AK. One thing I remember is that you really knew your stuff. (y)

Thanks, Tony. I bet it has, even though I remember it sounding very good. (y)
