Hello,

First post from a long time lurker here..

Preamps: (what else?)

I need a decent pre to front my DAW. For the moment I will be needing one channel only. The pre should be versatile enough to drive a mic, my tele as well as a bass. (Mic needs replacing as well, I currently have an AKG C3000 (the original, not the B) I'm leaning towards a RODE K2, but I'm doing the pre first)

I was considering the GT Brick (whichs seems to cost around $ 850 here in the Netherlands )

Another option would be to buy an old Telefunken from E-Bay.
I was looking at a V672 module but these only provide 34dB of gain unless you mod them.

I'm not sure if that would be enough. (I'm not very knowledgable in this area)

Does anybody have an idea, options or suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

Cheers,

Grooveteer.

I am liking what I read about The Brick a lot .... but I haven't heard one yet. There's supposed to be a couple on the way so I can review them.

My advice with mic pres is the cheap ones for the most part are pretty good with the exception of a few, mostly found in the porta studio thingies.

The pres that are a little more expensive (mid priced) are pretty good as well. But I don't really think mid priced pres on the whole, are really any better than the least expensive ones.

When you get into the high end, there's quite a lot of differences not only between the high end and the budget end, but also between the different high end offerings.

What it all breaks down to is IMO, there's essentially no differences in pres until you get into the high end. I advise making your chioces based on the features one pre may have over another rather than the hype the manufcaturers dish out.

Some will say they hear a difference and I say great, good for them. But it's a lot of hair splitting as far as I am concerned. Yes there's some sonic differences but not as much as if you were talking about high end pres. In the budget arena, most mic pres are more similar than different.

Thanks Kurt.

One of the local shops here has finally ordered a Brick so I can have a closer look. (It does help if you keep calling and calling 8)

I don't think that the pres in my Tascam FW1082 are all that bad, but it would be nice to be able to add some color. (Not the kind of 'color' I get from my ART MP...)

How would you feel about something like this:

Not sure how much these would cost, but I don't mind spending some $$ on something that I will be happy with in the long run.
