I just bought a 1-channel outboard preamp and a 2-channel outboard compressor.

My question is: how do I use both the compressor and preamp at the same time?

Do I use the effects send/return inputs? Or do I use a ton of XLR cables going from my mics to my preamp to my compressor then finally to my multitracker?

Using the send/return thing would be ideal, as I have some of those cables lying around. But I only have 3 XLR chords, so I would have to but a couple more if that was the only way to do it.

I'm a total newbie, so any help would be greatly appriciated.

Hi,
You could use it as you have suggested
Mic-Preamp-Compressor-Multitracker
or your if your multitracker has "insert" points you could go that route.
Some people like to compress on the way in to the multitrack others afterwards, its a question of taste.
Im not sure about using effects send and return in this instance, though it would probably work.
You could think of the first method as being "Destructive",undoable,
and the second as allowing you to keep your compression options open. It would'nt be unusual to do both,a little on the way in and some more later on.
