Hi all, if been reviewing your posts (present and past with great interest. I've spent several months going from P3 to P4 to AMD XP back to P4. I recently came to the conclusion that for me the P4T-E was the way to go. You've convinced me that the P4B266 demands my attention.

I'm planning to eventually (soon I hope, although SONOFSMAUG has me extremely discouraged) build a DAW for use with the Delta 66 Omni that I already have and the Sonar that I hope to get. So far it looks like the P4B266, P4-1.6a or 1.8a, nor-raid, non-SCSI, non-overclocked, Evermax 365 PSU, 2 hard drives, CDROM, CD-RW, etc. This post will hopefully get me closer to the ultimate DDRRAM, which so far I an thinking will be one stick of 512MB to start.

In a previous post the following recommendations were made: CAS2, unbuffered/unregistered/non-ECC/gold on gold or tin on tin.

I've been investigating memory availability and price for 512 MB and found the following:

Crucial CT6464Z265, 512MB, PC2100, CL2.5, Unbuffered, 6 layers, $174 at Newegg

Kingston KVR266X64C25/512, 512MB, PC2100, CL2.5, $136 at Mwave.

Corsair CM64SD512-2100, 512 MB, PC2100, CAS2.5, $162 at Mwave

Corsair CM64SD512-2400, CAS2, $181 at Mwave

Micron MT16VDDT6464AG, 512MB, PC2100, CL2.5, $168 at Mwave.

Questions:
1) which one from the above or is there better?
2) It appears Cas 2 is not available in PC2100
3) How do you know if the connectors are gold or tin, and what is the P4B266?
4) Is there any advantage/disdvantage or to going with PC2400 or up if you are not overclocking?
5) What is "6 layers?

Sorry for the length of the questions, but I've got at least a thousand left!

That's what I'd do if I had it all over again to do. However, I still love my P4T-E 1.6a OC'ed to 2.128GHz, it's fast and stable.

I'd only consider CAS2 and I'd get at least PC2400 just because it's known to work stable at the higher speed, so it'll definitely be extra stable at normal lower speed, ...besides having such overclock capability at your fingertips and not trying it? Come on, we're all miserable sinners who succomb to temptation. That's like having a candy bar right in front of you and resisting the urge to eat it.

Here's also:

CORSAIR 512MB PC2400H DDR RAM - OEM 184-Pin. CL=2 -Unbuffered 2.5V. 64x64 for $180 at newegg. Googlegear.com has it for one dollar cheaper. I've had very good luck buying from them too, all my new machines stuff came from there. You can save a lot on shipping by buying everything from the same place in one order sometimes even if some individual parts are cheaper elsewhere.

They also have some CAS2 256MB PC2400 and PC3000 but I'd stay with the 512M size so you'll have the other slot open to put in more later.

I wouldn't worry about the gold/tin issue, it's not a big deal at all unless you operate the machine in a corrosive humid environment

The 6 layers means that there's 6 total layers of copper circuit traces in the printed circuit board material, one layer on each side with 4 layers sandwiched down inside the fiberglass material.

Too bad Crucial doesn't have CAS2, the fastest they seem to offer is 2.5-3-3.

That Mushkin CAS2-2-2 would be the ideal performer in a DAW, but $219 for a 512MB stick even makes me cringe. Would I buy it anyway? probably ;) even if I had to subsist on soup and peanut butter sandwiches for a couple weeks to compensate for the extra cost.
