Is there any such thing as a mastering console that would be considered semi pro?

Something that would have level control and a few inserts. 3 pairs of outputs? Perhaps a 2 to 4 rack space size.

But with a smaller price tag then the custom built stuff?

Depends- You can make something like a Coleman Audio M3P work as "mastering console" of sorts- you have 4 ballanced ins and 3 outputs, switchable. If you need to use it more in a traditional mastering console situation, you may want to look at something like the Cranesong Avocet which has a much more features for remembering levels, etc... in a mastering environment. You could also contact somebody like Steve Firlotte of Inward connections and see if he'd adapt one of his existing products for your needs. If it is scaled back, he'd probably be able to knock a certain amount off of the price...

What sort of price point are you looking towards?

Well if I told you - you'd laugh. But I was just misinformed I guess.

But I just came from Odysey Pro Audio's site and the list price for the SPL DMC is $21000. Holy Cow. Lets put it this way I can't approach even half that.

The Coleman audio idea sounds interesting. And if my memory serves me I think I'd be able to go a little beyond their pricing.

But man I had no idea that these consoles could get in that price range. The SPL MC2 is upat $80000 I think.

Anyway, I guess when I posted here originally I was thinking along the Coleman idea or a little better.

I'd look at the Cranesong Avocet pretty seriously... Sound is good and has a heck of a lot of functionality, including converters. Cost is at about $2.5K.

Also, Steve Firlotte's controllers by Inward Connections come in at a pretty similar price (perhaps a touch more if memory serves me right). Crookwood would be another company to look at for consoles. They just updated their website and there don't seem to be any pix up anymore, but they have always had some pretty good quality products. I'm sure there are some other ones of similar quaity, but names are escaping me right now...

this is my first thread after reading all the forum (mastering one), and i have to thank you all for knowledge sharing.

I've found this last night and it seems the best (input/output/insert/m-s/stereo width/ chris muth engineering....)"non custom" mastering desk out there....

any opinion

Another possible alternative is from Crookwood, which has introduced the "Master 1 iMon" which features both analog & digital inserts, source and monitor routing and all the usual level matchers. Looks very cool - http://www.crookwood.com/products/iMon-Master%201.htm

I've never heard this particular piece but the maker has a very serious rep and has done custom consoles for a lot of European mastering studios.

MSRP according to their site seems to be $4300 but I'm not sure who their North American dealer is to confirm this. I'm definitely very interested in this piece as it seems a bit more full featured than the Dangerous Master which lists for $5500.
