Sd2 files are not preferd here. because there's a lack of the headers & most clients forget to give me the sample/bit rate. It's a guessing game at times to open them correctly. Interleaved is allways prefered cause it save me time working with the file. If your system does not allow you to create more than sd2 files you should update. i find using Awave allows me to to convert most files.

bias peak has excellent conversion.... also batch conversion where you can apply a plug or normalize as you go..... even power dither

i use protools on a mac so i have no problems with any filetypes.... but i know that the pc guys are lost when they see sd2..... poor guys :lol:

if you wanna be on the safe side of things go with .wav 24bit interleaved in 44.1 khz on a cd-r in pc data format (not audio cd)

every mastering house should be able to use that...

I was just wondering about different applications and the quality of their respective conversions.

I'm in the middle of having a project mastered and I've realized that different MEs want different particulars even within the same studio.

At the place where my project is at, how close I got to 0db depended on which engineer I was going with.
Split stereo was the requested format.
I sent them SDII and aiffs (I don't know which they used).

I came to my questions because I had to convert the SDIIs to aiff.

The convenience of the digital audio world is also a big can'o worms to all who are anal enough to wonder about how a file conversion sounds!

To top that I recently read an interview w/ Andy Johns who said that a plugin can move the phase of a track one or two degrees!
Is that a headache???

no!!!!!!!

he's probably right about the plug..... but i haven't experienced any problems with file format conversion if there is no dithering or processing going on...... and i'm a bit on the anal side....

and if there is it's less important than the losses in the d/a > analog > a/d chain..... or the phase shift in his analog eq..... or the fact that he might boost a little to much at 12kHz....
