I work part-time for an Apple Reseller right now and I personally have been holding off for the G5. I feel like Apple hasn't really made anything for us audio folks for the last three years, but are making that up now. The G5 is right up our alley. OS X is made for audio guys and gals and Apple is not looking back at OS9 either, so (as much as it hurts) we all have to jump soon. It means I'll have to buy a lot of new plugs and upgrades for PTLE but I really believe it will be worth it in the end. So my vote is go for the G5 dude. That's the way I'm heading.

Right now, Digi is scrambling to develop G5 compatability. Until that happens, sit tight.

I would also recommend getting the Apple supplied RAM. PT will have less issues this way. It may cost more up front, but you will not loose money by having down time.

I have a dual processor maxed-out/loaded G4 that I'll sell ya. LOL.

G5, absolutely:

My rule has always been to wait until my old box is hampering my progress, find and attempt to validate the best new box I can possibly afford, get the new one and drive it until IT'S wheels fall off.

Right now, under this MO, my present G4 Dual 1.25 MDD Mac would have to be letting me down for me to even go shopping. If that were indeed the case (which it isn't) the only viable replacement that qualifies is the G5.

If I were to pretend that I'm still using my old 604e Umax S900 Supermac and am going shopping now? I guess I'd still pick the G5, but only because I can afford it, it will run my stuff better and faster, and I have no need of an OS9 environment. If I were pressed for cash or needed OS9, I wouldn't hesitate to jump on the G4. Since I got the vacuum cleaner taken out of mine (for a while I thought MDD stood not for Mirror Drive Door but rather Mega Deafening Din) it has served me well and run circles around its "predecessor". (I wonder if the guy who invented that word had any idea how well it would fit computers?)

Then again, (and this is the biggie) I was READY to take on Cubase SX, give up on OMS (Hurray!!) and switch to USB MIDI and was willing to go through a few bumps and hassles along the way. SX is still not as reliable as the OS9 version of Cubase, so if I were actually charging clients or working under deadlines, I'd probably still be working in OS9.

HEY! Maybe Steve Jobs actually did me a FAVOR in January when he called 2003 the "Year of the Laptop" five days before I shrugged off my G5 hopes and bought the 1.25 MDD.

Who knows? Maybe some obscure critical app will get abandoned by its creator who runs off to do video games, stranding its well-heeled users in an OS backwater where they claw and fight to pay a fortune for the Last of the Dual Boot Megasaurs!!! YEAH!!!

Now, THAT wuld be irony. Jobs thinking he was pulling a fast one to buy time and foist the last of the G4s onto an unsuspecting market (me), while all the time, he was providing me with the Macintosh equivalent of a '59 Burst or a '63 Stratocaster.....

I'm gonna end this post and take my Dual Boot dreams of avarice into the Jacuzzi for a while.

Heh Robert...I'm kinda "drive 'til the doors fall off" too. So, I'll probably leap for the G5 although my PowerBook has been a nice bridge from the old Sawtooth.

I'm sure you got way more than you thought you could and that's good; but you're gonna pay way more than you thought you would -- and that's bad.

I could sell you half of my duplex and that 's good -- having an "in-house" Maczoid and all that; but I'd have to evict the seminary students who are paying my mortgage -- and that's bad.

Seriously, unless you need solitude or child-space or major entertaining areas or other single-family amenities, buying, for instance, a triplex with a nice "owner's unit" is a great idea: everybody parks on the driveway, and SHAZAM! You got an instant 3-car studio!

Yeah Robert, exactly correct. Its a bit discouraging. I was mainly moving to be closer to my gigs, family and lady (not in that order) but trying to find something as pleasant as where I am now is...******* impossible.

Oh well, I guess I'll move outwards, if I can be within half an hour of the "city", it will be 2/3rds better than now.

G5, I've pretty much have completed my OSX transition.

I moved from Cubase5/VST32 to Logic6, and I just ordered my DP4 upgrade.

I also recently upgraded Peak, all I really need is Sound Diver and ReCycle for OSX.

I primarily use outboard efx, so I wasn't dependent on plugins.

I'm thinking that a G5 in combination with a devices like the Yamaha 01X ( http://www.mlancentral.com/ ), or Tascam's FW-1884 is the way to go.

Heh, yeah, I know...I'm dreaming but it can't be any worse than trying to make that 6 pm, Friday West Side hit. That's a good "leave home by 3" sort of thing right now.

I may end up settling for a condo somewhere and finding a separate place to work.

Back on topic, I think I'm holding off on anything until I get moved. Then I'll probably go for the G5.

Robert the Firewire devices from Yamaha,and Tascam have a different functionality.

They have A/D,are also midi interfaces, and control surfaces.

The Yamaha unit also has efx.

But I already have that other stuff so I'm leaning toward the Mackie. Since no audio actually flows through it I can maintain my nice signal path and still park the mouse for most of my moves....

I haven' finish my transitions to OS X yet.. but As far as I know OSX is way better than OS9!! As far as spec wise, I would chose G5 for sure...
