I got this old tower from a guy at work for free, he said the HD was bad. I want to set this PC up for use as my Midi PC and use my other PC for my DAW. I am not sure of what is in this comp as far as the motherboard, processor, even what OS it is running, I want to say its a PII but I am not sure. Can you guys tell me what to look for and how to find out exactly what the system specs are. Can I plug it in and fire it up or will it not work at all because of the HD. Thanks.

I usually take the case screws and lid off. Easiest way to tell what its got going on. If it needs a drive, you'll have to do that anyway :)
It should at least boot the bios, even if there's no working drive. Depending on the age of it, that shold tell you also what it has into, how much memory, if it's finding drives, and some bios' output what devices it finds also.
Adding a new drive is nothing, but installing an os is.
