I'm in the process of getting the mute automation on my console working. I'm using an Allen & Heath Saber 24x16 and it has a built in midi mute automation processor. I'm currently using a 24 track setup. I primarilly use a 1"-16 track, and I use SMPTE to/from a BRC to sync a 20-bit ADAT to my tape machine.

So now I'm trying to use the BRC (which has MIDI IN and OUT) to somehow trigger my mute automation processor in my console. Is this possible? My console has a MIDI IN, OUT, and THRU. Or do I have send all the MIDI mutes out of the board and store them in a MIDI sequencer? Does the BRC have MIDI sequencer functionallity? Can the BRC store the MIDI information?

As you can see, I have no experience with MIDI at all. If anyone has any information that could possibly get me going in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Also, if you need more information just let me know.

Cedar Flat Fats,

Thanks for the clarification. From reading the Saber manual, the board has the capability of saving snapshots at one particular instance in time (ie the beginning of a song to be mixed), but cannot be used in real time muting unless a sequencer is used. As I stated before, I have no experience with MIDI. Do I need a hardware MIDI sequencer or should I use a PC/MAC with software? I don't have a PC/MAC in my current setup, but I know that I have an old computer laying around that could be used for this. I mix down to a hard disk recorder or 1/4". Please advise and perhaps list a few options.

I have and old Pentium II that I'm reformatting and getting set-up. I'm sure this will be sufficient. So now I have to figure out what software to use and what type of interface to use. I'm clueless as far as software goes... can someone recommend something? Regarding the interface, I found several option.

MIDI (1-in/1-out) to USB:

PCI card (2-in/2-out)

MIDI (2-in/2-out) Midiman to USB:

MIDI (1-in/1-out) to DB-15 [not sure about this one]?!?

Any comments or suggestions?

Now the only other thing I can think about it timing/syncing. As I stated before, I have a BRC that syncs to my analog multitrack using SMPTE. How would I get this MIDI muting in time with my tape machine/BRC?
