hey guys, i've started a home recording studio for almost 2 years now and i've managed to buy some decent gear(monitors, midi keyboard, maschine, audio interface and so on). I decided to do my own mixing and mastering for my own songs and i thought a mixer would be useful but i like to do it ''in the box''. I DONT like analog gear. To get to the point, my question is which is the best mixing console for mixing with fader automation with the DAW(which i love), (I use studio one professional 2 if this helps) ''in the box''? I would prefer to use usb connection. If firewire required, how do i connect it (my audio interface has no firewire port it's a PreSonus audio box). Any other information about the topic would be appreciated! :)

I use a bcr2000 that I bought from Thomann.de with studio one and I would recommend getting one of those. It's cheap and you can control almost every parameter on your vst with it. One knob can control unlimited amount of parameters sith different vsts. It's alot easier and quicker to control parameters with a knob than the mouse, just select a plugin and bam! The bcr recalls last changed parameters for that plugin.
You can also control volume faders with it, but only as many as there are knobs and then you loose the ability to control plugins since the mixerfaders are always showed. It might work if you hide the mixer, but I have never tried it so I'm not sure.
I don't know how it works if you have say 35channels with a studiolive that has only say 16 faders? Will you be able to control all faders with it still? Maybe there is a function that allows you to switch between channels like button1=1-16 button2=17-32 and so on?
I would take this in consideration before getting a studiolive since it would be a pretty disappointing if you expect it to be able to control all faders in studio one and it doesn't. Check with presonus crew to get solid answer on this, or atleast check their forum if somebody are using this setup.

I wish the SL worked that way, and I've wondered why PreSonus pulled up short on that - but the StudioLive will not interact with StudioOne beyond acting as the input/output device. Pushing the SL faders while mixing in StudioOne does not affect the ITB mix.
If something has changed in firmware, or somebody knows of a work-around, I'd love to know what it is.

I'm sorry, it's not exactly clear what you're asking for. If you like mixing ITB (in the box), then you don't need the audio to come out of the computer and pass through a mixing console (not that there's anything wrong with that). But if you just want an easier way to manipulate volumes and other DAW parameters while the sound stays ITB.... rather than a "mixing console", you should be looking for something called a DAW Control Surface. Those are available in various sizes and configurations anywhere from 1 slider to 24 sliders, with lots of other buttons, knobs, and blinking lights. (some with motorized faders to mirror the automation you program into the DAW). The mix stays in the box, and the Control Surface ordinarily connects to your computer via USB. Some also control the DAW transport functions ( STOP / PLAY / RECORD ).
