Opus 2000, I need your help. I'm trying for the fourth time to get Layla24 and Cubase 5.1 to work over W2K. Clean install, not upgrade on FAT32. Audio disk is formatted with the /z:64 switch.
I have an ASUS CUSL2 mainboard. no onboard audio.
1000GHz PIII
10GB Quantum system disk.
20GB IBM audio disk. Both 7200 RPM ATA100 IDEs on separate channels.
512MB RAM
I disabled the serial ports, switched to standard PC, disabled all of the network services, turned off the windows sound, switched the midi port to Layla24. Layla24 is all alone on interrupt 11.
The duplex and the multimedia ASIO drivers sort of work but sound like sh*t. When I switch to the WDM driver, no sound at all.
What am I missing? I believe you when you say that W2K is way ahead of W98 but would like to experience it myself. :confused:

What buffer size are you using in the Echo Control panel thru Cubase? Have you tried different settings? Making sure of course you have DMA on your primary and secondary controllers for the hard drives? Also putting PIO for the CDROM slaves?
Yes...when I go into my device setup in Nuendo it gives me Echo WDM ASIO or something like that...I'll check when I get home tonight and let you know...I think there's something else and again, I'll need to check when I'm home

I will make any changes that you can think of when I can get at the box. Where do I go to change to PIO mode for the CD-RW & CD-ROM slaves? Is that in the device manager tree under CD-ROM by chance?
I think that I kicked the buffer size down to 256. I started with the default, backed it off a notch, tried again, backed it off again and also nada.

Make sure the Master on each one is set to DAM if Available and the Slave on each one is set to PIO...again, I'll do some researching tonight when I get home from work and let you know

I'm redoing my system as I type so I'll look into it when it's done...have you tried a different PCI slot? I'm baffled at this point...that usually doesnt happen often ya know!! lol!!
One thing you might want to look into is to make sure UDMA is enabled in your BIOS!! I just noticed on my mainboard BIOS that it was turned off!! Doh!!! And I'm the computer mod too!! lol!!

Geez, this is driving me to drink! :D Yeh, I would prefer to reformat the w98 disk to audio disk #2. I don't remember seeing the UDMA enabling option in the BIOS. I thought I checked everything there but I certainly could be wrong about that! I will check tomorrow when I go back to the studio. Anything else you come up with I will try.

I was just piecing together info from the threads here. I think I will start over and follow your recipe. I noticed quite a few things that were different from my approach. I'll let you know the results.
One question, you say to add the registry key EnablUDMA66. Should that change to EnableUDMA100 if the disk is ATA 100?

OK, I was completely on the wrong track. I followed your recipe to the T and when I tried to play back one of the songs nothing! Just for the hell of it I tried recording a test. Low and behold stuff was coming out the monitors during recording. I tried playing it back. Nothing. Opened up the master mixer to check what the master bus was set to expecting to see 1 and 2. There was no 1 and 2. I reset to 3 and 4, changed the setting in layla console and viola, the sucky test played back. I opened a song and it played back. It was a fucking bug all along!! :D

You can add the run-as service to the list of services that can be disabled in w2k. It's a great feature for network administrators that allows the technician to open executeables, setups, .cpl files, etc., without logging off the user during remote administration. You hit the alt key and right click the program to get the run-as option and can authenticate with administrator rights. A great time saver. Unfortunately for me we are still running NT 4 on the network I administer so we have to log the users off and log on as administrator. Hopefully next year they will upgrade to XP. We have already been informed that they are skipping w2k.
Disabling this service will have no effect on audio.

Hmmmm...when you say the sound sounds like shit..what do you mean exactly? Do you get crackles and pops? Distortion? Describe what your getting exactly which may help me to understand whats going on....also have you installed the latest version of the driver from Echo?
