So I think my final decision is to have the backups run on another coputer and backup my audio shares ond my DAW from the other computer.

This way I can cut back the services that need to run on my DAW pc.

I will still have to run all networking services. :( I don't know how to get around this though, cuz my other computer is a laptop and my backup drive lives on my DAW.

I could backup my audio files by hand. And find another hardrive to backup my home files to. But I don't know if cutting down the networking services would be worth the nuisance.

Ummm...that makes no sense...how can you cut back services and yet still expect to have networking?
you can't...especially with networking..that means you will need more services running than you would with just simple internet connections!
There are only a few services that truly affect any performance on a computer.
Networking isn't one of them so I wouldn't worry about it really..

I figured I would only have to run the server, network connections & workstation services.

That I could turn off:
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Computer Browser
IPSEC Policy Agent
TCP/IP NetBios helper

I also wasn't that concerned with performance but of stories of pops and clicks from NIC related activity.

Umm..you need tcp/ip..dns and dhcp for networking...
tcp/ip is your networking protocol..gives and receives the addresses...dns is your domain connection..each machine is a domain in it's own mind...
dhcp is crucial as well for networking...host controller protocol..who be the master etc etc etc
Computer browser..well, any computer connected to the machine is browsed..needs to for proper connection..
I think you get the point...

I believe the newer versions of Windows (2k,XP) use DNS or DDNS for INTRAnetwork browsing...

As for all the services you mentioned turning off I agree with all but the Computer Browser service...

Especially since you are planning to do you backups from the network.....

It gives you the ability to see the other clients and servers on your network.... With out it you would have to search for the computer by IP address......
