Over the last week or so my computer has stalled/got stuck and I am wondering if there is a way to determine the cause:

I am thinking perhaps I am running out of processing power?

Here is my rig:

PC
1.8 gig
1 gig RAM
Cubase SX3

on one occasion I was recording two tracks on Cubase. When I added 2 plugins =compression and verb the program made an awful scratching/distorted noise which would not stop. I had the shut the computer down manually

the other occasion I was editing a slide show using Pinnacle Movie edting software...the program froze and would not respond. Again, I had to reboot.

I recall that Cubase recommends minimum 2.8g chip and 1 gig RAM. Could it be that I need a new computer? If that's the case can anyone offer suggestions on what specs I need to look for so that I can purchase a computer that is up to speed now and strong enough to carry me in the future for awhile.

RobA

Ok. Here's the deal. Your computer can probably handle these things relatively well, but there can be times when more power is needed.

The two incedents you gave are totally unrelated. They could be systemic problems or programatic problems. Hard to tell after the fact.

The only way to tell if you NEED a new computer is if your current computer is not satisfying your needs. If the lock ups and problems are frequent, then you might begin looking into getting a new machine. If they are few and far between, and you can live with them, then you are probably fine.

As for suggestions for a new computer, there are literally 1000s of different suggestions. Just buy the fastest thing you can get for your money. Get the best perfoming processor, as much memory as possible, a couple well endowed hard drives and a good motherboard.

I have much less than you, a 1.3ghz p4 CPU and 256mb Rambus using SX 2, so you should definitely be fine. But what CPU are you using? Celeron? I wouldnt use a Celeron for audio or video work. To do stuff like that you need a CPU with balls and the Celeron to my knowledge isnt really cutout for heavy duty work. Its great for listening to MP3's while typing book reports in microsoft word but I wouldnt be using it in demanding applications.

My SX 2 box lists the system requirements and it says: (PC)

Required:

- P3, 384MB of free RAM
- Win 2000/XP

Recommended:

- P4 1.4 or faster 512 MB of free RAM

I am typing all this to give you an idea and explain why I dont think its your system specs. And so you dont go out and buy a new MB/CPU combo and possibly have the same thing happen.

Hope this helps.
