What Tascam gear do I own??

Don't Laugh.....
A TSR 8 1/2 inch analog.

I've had it for too long to get rid of it now. I hope to never in a weak moment sell it, in order to get the next great digital doodad. That thing has saved my butt a couple of times. One time the ADATS went berzerk and the other time a computer crash...not a problem, lets just plug in the old TSR 8 !! :D The band played on......
I've seen these machines for 4 or 5 hundred dollars. To some these decks are a toy, but for what I do, it works just fine. I like Tascam, the MX2424 recorder is just a little out of my price range right now. But I am looking into the Alesis HD 24.
I know this is "DAW World" ..oh well.

My Favorite peice of gear?? My API 3124 preamp, 4 channels...I want another :eek:

I'm looking forward to the day I can afford a MX2424. I'm also looking forward to Tascam's new digital mixer the DM24 which will interface perfectly with the MX2424.

My favorite piece of non-Tascam gear is my custom set of mic pres I built. They're about as high-end as you can go... $1000 just in parts for a stereo pair. Love them....

I've got a DA60 + sync board, a DA98 + digital interface (IF888E, or something) and a DA30 MK1.

Can't say I got any particular gripes about either one of them. They've both done their job reliably for a number of years. The metering on the DA98 is a bit basic compared to that of the DA60 but is comparable with most of it's competitors.

Well, I *had* a Tascam 80-8 with Tascam's 8 channel DBX Type 1 add-on which I had modified at the time of purchase with 8 mini switches to turn the DBX on/off individual channels. That was 1978, and I think maybe later that feature was standard - not sure. Anyway, the 80-8 was a real workhorse, and the only problem I ever had with it (and I, apparently, was not the only one) was that the supply side "tape spool holder" (pardon that incorrect non-technical description) was forever coming loose. Eventually, I just kept the left side wood panel off so I could use the Allen wrench to tighten it as needed. That was suggested by a pro machine tech. Nevertheless, together with the Tascam 25-2 half-track stereo machine w/DBX and balanced mic lines, etc. (nice machine, still have), I did a lot of recording.

For what I was doing, I could have done with 24 tracks from the beginning, but prices were very steep, and I wasn't interested in leasing, which would have forced me into taking what was more like a project studio to the next level... business at any cost. I finally sold the 80-8/DBX with the idea of going digital.

Haven't figured out which of the 1000s of ways there are to do that, yet.

hey Valkie!! I own two Tascam produced objects (used to own three)
a 428, and a DA-MKII dat machine. My favorite would be the 428, cause it reminds me of blueberries....

What's missing is balanced analog outputs.. BUT someone I know of is working on a hardware mod that will include balanced analog outs.
It would also be nice if it had the ability to be upgraded to USB version2.. but...

My little recording journey started with a 424 four-track, but now the only Tascam stuff that still find a home around here are my TMD8000 board, and my trusty DA30 DAT deck (which is the loneliest piece of gear on the planet due to a little-known invention known as the "recordable CD" (maybe you've seen them) ;) Anyway, I love the 8000, even though it's occasionally quirky, and I wish that the faders sent MIDI data the right way, but oh well, it's big and beautiful. My favorite piece of gear out of everything would probably be my POD Pro. I know, you can't beat real amps, but for convenience and processing stuff other than guitars, it's been super cool. Later.

Duh, I forgot. I have a DA-30. It's been a while since I've used it, but I recall that when I got it, it seemed to sound more natural than some other digital devices at the time. As a main two track, I am likely to go with something along the order of a Masterlink, but I have DA-30 archival stuff, plus I like the idea of having the various formats one might need. In other words, I'm not letting it go. :) I feel the same about my half-track Tascam 25-2. One great feature it had was the ability to play back 1/4 track, too. So, if someone has a stereo quarter- or half-track tape at 7 1/2 or 15 ips that needs to be digitized or whatever, I'm set. I sort of miss razor blade editing. Actually, about all I ever did was put leader between songs and such, but there were a couple of times when mid-song edits saved the day and sounded really good.

Hey Curve... miss ya....

definitely my portable dat - dap1, has lasted incredibly well, never needed servicing, probably the best piece of music gear i've ever bought. i use it mostly for field recording, gathering sound sources etc.

i also have a us-428 (using with win 2000), which has completely rejuvenated my approach to music making. i think it's the physical interface that does it - the last 4 or so years i've been using a plain old sp/dif card with my dat.

Dropped the noise floor to almost zero.

Like I said... I mostly use it as a mixer now.Don't get me started on the story about when my computer fritzed on me, in the middle of a project

I wouldn't trade my PORTA 1 for anything! Which reminds me, I should pick that machine up from the shop... gotta keep those belts tight. Once I shocked a college class ( American Fiction) with a project I had recorded on this machine... In fact, I recorded the first song I ever wrote on the Porta 1... I remember when I added a second mic to the arsenal... and wondered how I ever lived without it... What a great 4 track. Those were very happy and artistic days for me. Pure creation

I also have a US 428 and love it too! Originally, I bought this machine to bring audio in and out of an original Imac... Nice way to get hooked on the computer based recording thing... I'm now using it to control a Mix Plus rig... That's my story! Totally happy with all my Tascam stuff! Gotta get back to tracking... feel a song coming on... Later! Flush
