There's really no "special mastering" computer out there... You buy or build the best machine you can, just like anything else. It really isn't going to differ from a tracking/mixing machine...

You're still going to need huge amounts of RAM, speed, slots (depending on your interface - Which like a tracking machine, is going to have to have a large number of I/O for surround capabilities).

Unless I'm just confused about the question... :?:

Good to hear from you John.
According the weather reports  ,it looks like its the usuallfreeze youre ass off time of yr in Chicago. Its nice and warm here in southern Texas
Anyway, maybe you can inlighten me with some knowledge.
Here is my situation: I have 6 Roland VS880s,slaved together,I usually only use 24 tracks for recording/tracking/mixing,then Ill use the other 2-3 880s (24 trks) as mastering units. They recieve all the music after its been run through compressors, dynamic processors, eqs etc......
What Id like to do,is run the mastered final mix, into the computer,to further master the music/and possible go with a 3-1 sorround finish product.
The problem I know I have,is that the 880s are SCSI port.
I know Im going old school by using so many 880s,but its what Ive got,Ive taken time/effort/money to purchase my real class A preamps/eqs,processors,compressors,mics---this list---as you are well aware of,,goes on-and-on.
Id like to have a computer to aid me in the final process.
Alot of music Ive been listening to-has that 3d/sorround sound to it.
I just need someone to advise me on my best options.
Maybe Im barking up the wrong tree, and maybe I should just leave well enough alone, and stay away from the computer, but according to almost everyone, the computer is the way to go.
Any advise----is well taken

Michael Fossenkemper wrote: so it's not surround sound per se, just stereo stuff that envelops you? what a computer will give you is better editing capabilities, being able to run plugins, better options for a/d/a converters, burning a redbook CD, check your email. In fact, there's probably no reason why you can't use the computer you're using now.

Okay,,,,with that in mind,,,,,say I would like to copy a song on to my computer from my good old cdrw, change it into mp3,edit,maybe add/remove freqs, and possibly 3-1 sorround----what soft ware do you recommend?

Got -it.
I like the way Ive panned some of my material,so Ill just keep it up.
So,what youre saying is,is it really isnt worth going sorround unless you plan on working with video, and making it 5-1 sorround/3-1 sorround for the video, played back on a system thats sorround sound ready.
So----with that said,What software do you recommend?

If you are making your CD Audio masters in any other format than good ole Redbook 44.1/16 stereo, then people are going to have trouble listening to them in their stereos. Not really a matter of whether it is worth doing or not. :?

From what Im gathering,I may just need some simple soft ware to possibly better edit/fade the final product.
I would also like to see what the song looks like (spectrum).
I wouldnt even mind being able to turn the material into wave form, but my 880s dont have that capability,,, SCSI outs
Hell!---it sounds like Im talking myself right out of going the computer route!
