My most important question is (after do I like the sound or not) is how upgradeable is it? I hate the "synth de jour" thing that seems to be prevelent in the industry these days. I try to pick something that has some staying power. I've found that my old synths, with some intense programming and using outboard FX sound just as good as most of the new toys out there. Granted that they are a little noisier and don't have as much memory, but I just can't justify buying something new every year.

Peace,

Greetings...
The Motif rack DOES NOT have sampling capabilities like it's full sized sister version. It does come with a larger sound bank and I believe more drum kits offered in the rack over the regular version of the two. If you want to sample, the Motif rack version is out. For more on the Motif rack, there is a great article in Sound on Sound's June issue of 2003.

Howdy

Regarding the Motif rack, I haven't used one yet. During development I heard that it didn't have the RAM capabilities, then I heard it did so I don't know what the story is. I can understand if it doesn't have the sampling capabilities as that requires physical space the box may not provide.

Regarding the Motif ES rack, no idea if that's true but it seems logical to me.

trev,

the MOTIF is hot. I had one, but it was stolen. Right now I am saving up for the Rack. Since you have the MPC as your sampler, you could go for the rack version. But you still need a keyboard to play it. a cheap one will do, or maybe a used one, as long as it has MIDI.

The one thing i have heard about the triton line is that they sound good when the effects are on, but bad when they are off. Keep in mind that you will be most likely running multiple tracks, so you won't be able to have effects on all the parts at once.

And besides that, do you really want the same board that every other hip hop producer (including Swizz) has? My biased opinion is MOTIF, but that is without having heard the triton.
