So... I have a LV track for a new song I'm working on...
The song is fresh, not beaten to death yet.
My Pitch is fine. My Phrasing is fine. The Sonics of the recording are also very nice.
And I hate it. I despise it. It sounds awful.
There's no fidelity issues, it's not like I'm busting my ass to cure tonal problems, either in the performance, or in the sonics. It's sitting very nicely in the mix with the rest of the tracks.
But the performance is lackluster, emotionless, it just kinda lays there ... it sounds like I totally phoned this one in... but I didn't... I really thought it was sounding good as I was recording it.
It just doesn't have any of the "Yeah! That's the one!" factor. No goosebumps, no chills.
It's just sooo "meh"...
Continued proof that there's so much more that goes into a great-sounding track than what a lot of people think.
That's all. I'm done complaining now. Sigh.
We discussed that many times, recording and performing at the same time is a hard on human brain.
Out of that if you can't relate to the story the song tells or the melody or even the genre, It's hard to put the energy and right intention into the performance.
The great performers are like actors, they are very good at pretending.
I guess you have to, either change your way of attacking the song or change it to make it more to your liking or find another signer to perform it... ;)
It's possible you're just too close to it right now to have perspective. It might be better than you think.
In this case, you might need the feedback from someone who knows exactly what you're capable of, and can use that as a yardstick. Find someone you have a long history with, like Giovanni, or Jonah and the boys, who would be honest with you if they know you could do better - or, if they thought the arrangement of the song, or song itself needs a 'lift' somewhere.
Or, maybe you just need some time away from the song for a while. It might sound more alive to you with fresh ears, or if you obsess about a different song for a while.
Hang in there, you'll get it.
