Master Mix on Fostex Digital 8 track

Any Fostex users out there? I forget my model number - 8 track recorder (4 tracks at a time) with CD burner. I'm seeking advice regarding the order in which the tracks should be recorded and how they should be mixed. I have some M Audio speakers - which tend to sound "muddy". I'll get a mix that sounds good in the headphones only to have it sound like crap through the speakers.

8 track reel-to-reel to daw?

Hi all,

I've just acquired a Fostex 8-track reel-to-reel recorder and an looking to record onto tape and then send the 8 tracks INDIVIDUALLY from the unbalanced rca/phono output to my daw.

Does anyone know the easiest path to do this?

Most of the audio interfaces I've viewed only allow for 2 stereo tracks to be sent or a sum of all 8 channels. I need them to be separate for post editing!

Many thanks for any help.

Recording a band "live" using 8 tracks or less...

Hi folks,

I'm an audio geek in my 40s. I have a bit of training and experience with recording bands, but I'm coming back to recording after a long hiatus.

Here's my situation and questions...
  • I'm in a rock trio (I play bass with a drummer and guitarist) and we want to record our band in a rented house over a long weekend. We play rock covers (Beatles, Grateful Dead, Pixies, Radiohead) and some originals. I will be engineer, tape op and musician.

Tascam Portastudio 414 8 track problem

Hi guys,

For some reason track 1 is giving me allot of distortion. Has the volume pegged pretty much. I tried cleaning the tape head, but it didn't work. Also there does not need to be a tape for there to be distortion. If I just hit play without any tape I get the same thing. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Help With Learning Calibration Procedure For 1/2" 8 Tracks.

Member for

Hello, I recently acquired two 1/2", 8 track machines - a Tascam TSR-8 and a Tascam 38. Both are in very good condition.

I own a de-magnetizer and I know the heads will have to be de-magnetized occasionally as well as cleaning of the metal and rubber moving parts in the tape path.

However I know nothing about aligning and calibrating these machines as far as adjusting azimuth, running calibration tones, oiling motors, etc.

Which 8 track should I get?

I'm new to this forum and to the world of home recording in general.
I 'm looking to get an 8 track recorder.I'm a song writer and have been in a band for years.
The main purpose of it would be make demos of songs as I write them.
The ones I've come across and am interested in are - Korg D888, Tascam DP-02, Fostex MR-8 HD/CD.
As I said I dont really know to much about the tecnical side of this world and whatever I get I'm gonna be doing a whole lot of learning.
They all seem to have advantages and disadvantages.
