I am currently using EZ Drummer as a plugin on Logic 9.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get a thudding 'kick' from the kick drum? I find i am either getting it buried in the low end, or it is distorting terribly!

I am trying to get a better drum sound for my song i am currently recording with my friend.
i am not satisfied with the sound of the drums, i feel like i cant quite get it to punch through the song enough without causing clipping problems. especially the snare and kick.

any suggestions would be awesome!

I'm in a band and we would like to do our recordings ourselves. I can handle recording the guitars, bass, and vocals, but I have a few questions about recording drums.

I'm looking for a good "Glue" room mic that adds allot of texture to a drum recording.
I only use one room mic (panned center) cause I feel it gives more focus to the kit and a focal point, versus having two stereo panned room mics.

Here is the space, a large classroom:

20' x 40' long, 12' high.
Tile Floors, Brick Walls, Drop Ceiling, Sound Panels up high

Drums:

4 piece 1970 ludwig with old zildjian cymbals, for indie rock/reggae style

Recording chain:
PreSonus FireStudio (8 preamps )
Sonar 8.5 (thanks recording.org!)

My mic options:

Can anyone advise me how to tape a drumkit using an analog eight track?
The only compressors I have are a few cheap Behringers (begin laughing about now!)
Can I get decent results using these to control peaks etc.., or do I just compress the kick with one and leave the rest of the kit alone?
Would it be OK to maybe, compress the kick and limit the toms and snare?

I have concerns...
