understanding headroom -- dBv, dBu, VU primer ?
Reasonably new to this. This question arises from my search for a new/new-to-me preamp to replace my mobilePre
(which, not surprisingly, doesn't provide tracks which stack particularly quietly).
I believe that I understand the concept of headroom (i.e. - how hot a (mic) signal can the preamp handle?),
but not the measurement units.
Mixing, volume, headroom, a little help please.
Hi, I've been reading quite a few of the threads on this forum regarding mixing, mastering etc.
Most of the threads start out with a nice question and end up in some discussion about how professional recordings are not made by accident etc, etc.
This makes them hard to read, and even herder to learn anything.
Anyone own a dynamic range controller?
Anyone own a dynamic range controller? What do you use it for? Mastering and mixing? Printing tracks? How does a dynamic range controller compare with a compressor?

Questions about Headroom / Levels
Wasn't sure where to post this since it's digital audio. But I'm wondering if there are any industry standards with regard to levels when recording.
I'm running a Mackie 1220 with Firewire interface and using the included Tracktion software on a Windows XP machine. My microphones (don't laugh) are a couple MXL's (the $100 combo pack).

Advice on a bang for the buck mic preamp--Need headroom FMR RNC
Hello. Currently have an ART TubePac-decent, but need more headroom. FMR RNP looks interesting. (and the price range) Any opinion, and or direction would help. Thank, Barefoot. (currently recording mostly Female Vox.)

Pop music mixing & dynamic range
I'm getting a little ferklempt, I'll give you a topic...
Mixing methodology. How do we normally tackle the mix? Build up a drum mix, followed by bass, and up to guitars and vocals? Or start off with solo vocals / lead element at a certain volume (?), and bring up the other elements around that?

Mastering and Dynamic Range
I like my tracks to have a pro feeling to them, but I've been seeing that normally mastering audio engineers have to make louder music every time they master, so every time I have to make a master for a song that I'm recording I see that I have to reduce it's dynamic range more and more to compete with other "professional sounding" tracks because today when you record a song that isn't as loud

Max Headroom and Darth Vader. .
How do you produce these with DAW software:
1) The studder effect of Max Headroom ? Ca-Ca-Ca-Catch the wave...
I can stack/cut/paste vocal loops in a multitrack, but this seems tedious. Is there a specific plugin for this?
2) Darth Vader glass jar effect ?
What kind of Reverb/Effect combination would this be?
