Recording max 8 channels with a low end Dell Laptop?

No plugins or ediiting needed, I plan to transfer recorded tracks to my home PC DAW for editing. I simply want something mobile to record 8 tracks max at 44.1/24bit (for drums, guitar, bass)

Can you get away with 256 Meg, less than 7200rpm harddrive, and 400 FSB? A low end Inspiron 6000 Dell selling now for around $600.

Or am I being too much of a tightwad ? :)

Low End Frequency issues with my RNC!

OK - I finally broke down and bought an RNC based on all the rave reviews in and about this site. I tested the unit out on my Drum Bus - There was an immediate and very noticeable hype in the high-endand the low end all but dissappeared. Anyone else have this same expereience? I know enuf to understanding that different settings will have an effect on freq.

Low end boards

I'm a just out of school engineer and a first timer on the site. I've got a small project studio in the works. I decided on a Mackie sdr24 for tracking, digi01 for editing and possibly mixing. What I wanna know is how much difference in quality for tracking is there between MX900 and Mackie 24x8. Price is 1300 vs 2600. Is it justified?
