A format introduced several years ago by Sony that allows recording and playback of audio to and from a small magneto optical disc with a capacity of 140MB. To be able to record 74 minutes of music, the technology applies a data compression algorithm called ATRAC that compresses the data by about 5:1, but also permanently changes the file on decompression. Therefore it is know as "lossy" algorithm. However, the advantages are a very compact size, a claI'm of 1,000,000 reuses of the media and the ability to random access data on the disc.

Hi I've had great results recording piano and classical chamber music with a Sony Hi-MD Minidisc recorder and some Core Sound binaural unpowered mics. However, the transfer rates are so slow from the MD to the computer and the whole technology just seems outdated in light of cheap flash based devices.

Recording with a Sony MZ-RH910 minidisc umm..recorder

Hello to all. I just bought a used Sony mz-rh910 minidisc recorder but, as it came from ebay, it came with little else but the unit and the seller's recorded disc, so I'm trying to figure out how to use it. I went out and bought some blank discs to "start from scratch." I got to the gig to record, inserted the blank disc, plugged into the PA head and pressed record, only to get the message "No track." I tried the used disc, and it at least recognized that there was a blank track, looked like it was recording, but did not.

Minidisc mic for recording live music..which is better?

trying to decide which to go with for use with a minidisc recorder - the Sony electret condensor mic or ECM-MS907. The first is much smaller but not digital, which is appealing, but I'm wondering if it would record well. Thanks!

Does anyone know everything about MiniDisc recorders?

I have the RH910 Hi-MD recorder. I go to a certain concert each year and one of the band members just hooks his md up to the soundboard with a "Y" cable and then gives me the disc.
In the past, I was not able to transfer it because I didn't have the recorder it was done on. I would prefer to use his again because I just got mine and I don't want to mess up my first recording on this show. If we record it on his (and I don't know his model but it is an older one-not Hi-MD)and he gives me the disc, will I be able to transfer it digitally or will I have to mess with analog again?

Sony TCD-D100 vs Minidisc vs Hard disk

Can anyone help.

I currently have a TCD-8 DAT walkman, which is sadly on its way out. Can anyone advise me on what I should get as a replacement. I need a small, compact recorder (non-timecode) that uses a format that is edit friendly.

Ive heard about the TCD-D100, but is it any good, and isn't DAT becoming an ancient format!

evening all, I'm new and been looking around tonight for some information about the new hi-md's from Sony (well not new,but yeah ya know) and just trying to find one that will do what i need it to and not cut my bank account down too much, pretty much i want it to listen to music (duh) and have recording (line in i guess?) features so that i can record the mixes from my turntables (I'm learning to DJ) so i can learn from my mistakes. Any and all suggestions are MORE than welcome and i thank you all in advance for your reponses.

minidisc clipping

I use my mic mixer (Behringer UB1202) with my portable minidisc player (Sony MZ-N1) for recording. When Automatic Gain Control (AGC) is on, the levels on the UB1202 and the minidisc player seem to correspond well. When I turn AGC off (manual mode), the recording is totally clipped even though the level indicators on the UB1202 are green. To get a decent recording using manual levels, I have to turn the ouput right down on the mixer. Is this because the maximum input levels are different for AGC and manual modes or is it some other problem?
