I'm buying a pair of Mackie MR5's. Does it matter what sort of cables I hook them up to?

What's the big difference between unbalanced cable and balanced cable?
Can I ear this change?

… by the way, active monitors works best with the level in the amp at full power, controlling in the software mixer?

My monitors go from -30 db to +6db
