Which shotgun microphone for Zoom H4N/Tascam DR40?

Shotgun Microphone
Shotgun microphones are the most highly directional. They have small lobes of sensitivity to the left, right, and rear but are significantly less sensitive to the side and rear than other directional microphones. This results from placing the element at the end of a tube with slots cut along the side; wave cancellation eliminates much of the off-axis sound.

Shotgun mic uses
It is obvious that the most common application for shotgun mics is video, but does anyone use them for recording anything in the studio of a musical nature?

Sennheiser 416 just died
Hello -- I'm new to the forums and my Sennheiser MKH416T just died.
It's been in a cabinet for over a year, hardly used at all (it's about 5 years old, I bought it used and tested it when I bought it from a Hollywood Sound guy -- worked fine then).

Shotgun mics in the studio.
Is there a purpose for shotgun mics in an audio recording studio, and if so, what is it?
It is worth noting that I know what a shotgun mic is for. I am just curious if they have found niche roles in some studios.

Shotgun mics in the 300 dollar range.
We need some shotgun mics to record a film. There is a limited budget of about 1g for audio equipment. Can anyone recommend some shotguns that will play well with a purely transistor-based preamp in the 300 dollar range? Thanks for any suggestions.

Sennheiser 416 shotgun for VO
I have never, knowingly, used this actual mic for VO? I may have? There you go. Just to clarify. No knowledge.
Some apparently "big time" LA VO guy says, on his website(From a recent VOB post), that he has one of these available along with unspecified LDC's, if needed for use in his own VO studio... Got me thinking(A rarity, yes, thankyou.)...
