Hey everyone, been researching this last night and today.
The AT 4050 seems cool but I already have a multipattern mic(AKG perception 400)... so my main question is, is the 4040 the same thing just without multiple pickup patterns?
Plus, what is the general opinion of the T3 vrs the AT mics?
thanks
edit: by the way, with any luck I am going to be running whichever of these mics I choose through a UA LA-610.

Yeah really my only point with that was that the 4040 is cheaper
Yeah really my only point with that was that the 4040 is cheaper than the 4050 and I wouldn't mind sacrificing the multipattern if it was the same otherwise.
The T3 is appealing due to the tube, but I haven't heard any samples of it whereas I have heard the 4050 and loved it.
I was leaning towards the T3 but it's such a hard decision.. the 4050 seems like the best choice for now though... given that I don't need the multiple patterns, do you think the 4040 gets close enough to it to warrant going for the savings?
edit: the 4060 seems pretty amazing but it's getting up there in price. Think it's worth saving up for a little while longer?

The 4040 may or may not be a good mic for you regardless of price, but you should know that the multipattern capability of the 4050 is part of the sound and sound character of that mic like it is with any other multipattern mic, so the 4040 is not going to be or sound the same as the 4050 even if you just use the 4050 in cardiod mode.
Anything worth having is worth it's price. The 4040 I wouldn't waste my time on. And while some people may not agree that the 4047, 4050 & 4060 are great mics, they would likely agree that they are all really good mics, and mics worth owning. As an owner of all of them as part of my mic collection, I would be also be on that list.
The T3 is a multi pattern mic also, so I'm not quite sure what y
The T3 is a multi pattern mic also, so I'm not quite sure what your point is concerning this aspect. Although it is a tube mic whereas the 4050 is not. Its a very good mic and I will say that it responds very well to higher end mic pres.
Of the three the 4050 is the superior mic in terms of clarity, depth of field, and versatility. The 4040, though it has the same family designation as all the 40 series mics in the AT line, is voiced a bit differently than the 4050 as are all the 40 series mics. Their point was to provide a complete studio needs if you owned all the line. After hearing the mics I can say that they have done this.
