so I've been running a ibook with a MOTU 828 for 3 years now,
i just got my hands on a Soundcraft Ghost
to which i've fallen in love with this outboard summing
time to put it to use
Time to upgrade!
my 1 requierement is to have a DAW integrated 24 in/out
oh yeah, budget of 5000$
walk down to the store and talk to the guy
blabla
he advises

mac g5 dual 2.0
moto 24 i/o with pci card
Digital performer
Reason

is this what's best for me
what about RME?
i've heard good things about them
i still want to do my programming on my ibook g3
what limitations do i expect to come across.
(with audiodesk i had to have my MOTU plugged in all the time...)

let's hear your suggestions

Your proposed setup is really similar to mine. I have a Ghost and currently I run a MOTU 896HD. (I also run 3 ADAT's). I really like the sound performance of the 896HD. I also run DP4.5. The 896HD and DP4.5 work great together. I have used the MOTU PCI systems at my studio and others and they sound really good. IMHO however I think the converters (even when running at only 96KHz) sound a lot better on the HD192 interface. Also, the reason I went with the 896HD as opposed to the PCI system was because for a majority of situations I actually liked the preamps in the MOTU better than my Ghost. They seem to have more clarity and improved transient response compared to the Ghost. Over the next few months I'll be phasing out the ADATs and moving in more channels of 896HD.

The RME would put me over budget, but they are worth saving for. The HDSP 9652 has 3adat in and 3 adat out
which would be 24 tracks at 48khz
or only 12 tracks at 96khz

why do you recommend the ADI8-DS
it`s only advantage over the ADI8-pro
is that it`s "Doubble Speed" 96khz
i might as well go with the pro since i`ll need 24 tracks

What are the limitations of FireWire units daisy chained like the 896
I know that the adat component to them gets turned off when you record at 88.2 or 96khz, so does that mean that there is a direct limitation and that daisychaining two 896, or three like you suggest, is useless in that you won`t get your 24 channels like you want.

I`ll start a new thread, but what is the limit to FireWire?
