I was wondering if anyone knows how to get the effect that is used in a lot of death metal on the vocals. A great example of the is "Dead by Dawn" by Deicide, the sounds of the growling and screams in the beginning. It's sort of a phasing type sound that I have heard on many Deicide songs and also some Bloodbath songs like "The Soulcollector". It kind of makes the voice sound like you are riding past it in a tunnel. If you know what I'm talking about and know how to get this effect let me know.

i havent heard those songs but theres a few things ive noticed with most sorts of scream type vocals.

sometimes they track them a few times and pan them around.

try using some delay to comb filter a little (keeping it pretty dry) that creates a tunnel sound

distortion can thicken it up if you use the right type (more of a flat DI pedal sounding distortion or a 20$ amp sounding, both do crazy stuff)

wumpscut has some strange vocal techniques, i was listening to him today and it sounded like hard panned a lot, had one where it sounded like it was hard panned and delayed to 'smooth out' the vocals. one used a vocoder, interesting stuff.

I'm not 100% on this but, I heard the Impirical Labs Distressor is good for making vocals sound more like you want. (distorted and such)
Also the reverse vocals are easily done with a Harmonizer, but they are not cheap. I paid like $3500 for mine. But then again they are worth it. If you have the money and you are serious.
Good luck

Benton always tracked more than one vocal. One was his usual gutteral growl and then high-pitched (blackmetalesque) screams on top and all around. I really don't remember an effect like this is Dead by Dawn, but I do know what you're referring to in the Bloodbath song... It sounds like phasing to me... either just a phase effect, or actually moving the wave forms around to cancel each other out... I'd bet it's just a plug in effect. Now, what effect exactly, would be known by the engineers. Play around with flanging, phasing, even perhaps chorusing to achieve this sound...

It's my solo band Degorrot.

http://www.myspace.com/degorrot - these are all rough mixes with drum triggers, I'm rerecording all of them with real drums and improved vocals for my new release "Fistula Disemboguing Balar Ganglia". The new songs are coming together pretty slow, I hope to finish the cd by March at the latest and go on tour with my guitar and laptop with protools playing all the other instruments. Then hopefully I'll find some people to join the tour band...

BTW the song I just got sweet ass vocals done is not on there and "Hydramnios Feast" is pretty much finished, I just have to rerecord real drums and maybe vocals (I got a great new sample I'm gonna put at the beginning too). What you think, should I redo the vocals on Hydramnios Feast? The one I just finished is my favorite called "The Nibirian Inundation". Just need to record the drums. I gotta get a mixer to record drums into only 2 inputs, it's gonna suck...I might just take my kit to a studio and pay.
