i am going to be upgrading my current Macintosh DAW from a G4 to a G5, however i am unsure of which model I should choose. I could not find any specific links to view a side by side performance benchmark of the two.

Can anyone tell me if the dual 2.5 performance is really that much different/better than the 2.0? Are they close? is the dual 2.5 worth the extra $500... or should i go with the dual 2.0 and sink the $500 into extra ram. ( I planned on purchasing 4GB ram for either model)

Also, can anyone tell me what "frontside bus" is and how that impacts performance... the frontside bus on the dual 2.5 is slightly faster.

I will be using DP4.5, 3 MOTU 2408, w/ virtual instruments like mack5, DFH superior and Stylus RMX.

thanks.

with every new version comes bugs and products not currently up to snuff. Sometimes you have to wait months before all the software needed is all compatable. I would buy the newest and most powerful unit I could and deal with the bugs as you go.

If time is of the essants and you find that the software you ant isn't all bug free etc then maybe take an older model. Find the software you want, see if they have support forums like you doing now.

I wish I was looking for a new Mac this season.

Merry Christmas!

Cheers!

for $500 yes its worth the it.
not only do you have 1 extra gig of power but the bus speed on the 2.5 is faster than the 2.0 too, so your gonna be able to get more tracks, plugins etc with the extra power.
4gig is more than enough ram for the dual G5's you Daw is gonna be awesome.. wanna get me one while your at it :D

if you don't have 2-3 uad-1's the 2.5 may help out on those large sessions. if you have 2-3 uad-1's the 2.0 could save you some money seeing that you aren't gonna be using a lot of cpu power.
