I've got a band that I'm recording and the vocalist wants to use a hand held mic to record his vocal tracks. I've never recorded a singer holding a mic. Is there a certain mic that I can use for this application? I was thinking an SM58 with one of those poofy things on it to control the plosives and sibilance.

Any suggestions? Yes this is for metal and we are going to overdrive the sh*t out of the vocals and compress them heavily. .my main concern is noise transferred through the shell and plosives.

I would first use the mic you recomend and the mic the singer likes and have a shoot out. I would never record with someone holding the mic but if it comes down to it I would use a sm57 with a pop filter and not a wind screen.

btw...Metallica Jamed Hetfield used a sm57 to get the drum tracks down then were trashed...Steven
