I'm a PC guy. Have been since I started working with them 5 years ago at my job. I'm certainly no expert, but I can do what I need to do with it and fix it when it's sick.
I've always had a special place in my heart for Macs. There's just something about'em. I rarely ever use one these days, but did for a while a couple years ago. Never got very deep into it. I don't know why...I just like'em
Anyway, last week I got together with a friend who has a G4 and the Digi001 with PTle. He had been trying to upgrade to the latest PT with OSX. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! I am in shock at the difficulty involved in figuring out how to do something that is pretty darn easy on a PC. I swear Mac techs must have to join some kind'a mystical order to learn their trade. My friend has a little 5x6 notebook where he's been collecting all the various "esoteric" key commands that the how to books don't seem to mention. Some of'em seem almost impossible to pull off if you're alone.
I'm reminded of the scene in Zoolander where they're trying to break into the iMac. That was pretty funny, 'cus they were morons, but it's really funny now, 'cus it didn't matter that they were morons.
Anyway, after a whole lotta crap, the G4 is upgraded to OSX and running the latest PTle. Guess what? None of his perifery is supported. No SCSI drives, no DVDRam drive. Needless to say, he can't do much with it. So what does he have to do? Use it in classic 9.2 mode until he can find drivers and stuff. So, what was the point? In all fairness I think Digidesign has what he'll need, but getting help from them seems to be spotty.
Well, inspite of this I still like Macs. I must be crazy. I really want to get one of those powerbooks with the 17" screen. Man those things are cool. Not sure what I'd do with it since all my music stuff is PC. But Hey, there's always Final Cut Pro. I could start editing films and video. But, as with everything else, it would be cheaper on a PC. The money saved could be spent feeding the crew while shooting. But, then again, who needs to eat, right? Maybe someday.

Frankly, My Main systems are STAYING on OS 9 and i dont give a monkey's arse, the laptop is on OS x but okay so its pretty... but there isnt actually any real functionality there that os 9 didnt have , for the stuff i want to do...
And THATS the crux of the matter....

It's the co-conspiricy from Palo Alto.. that's what it is. Mac and Digidesign are very close and they develop products together. They want the consumer to be in a position of having to upgrade every 16 months. They acomplish this by releasing new software amd hardware that is not reverse compaible. Digidesign has Apple people working in their facillity and vice versa. To top it all off, all these people live in an area where everything costs so much, and everyone makes so much money that they have lost sight of how much a dollar is really worth. So they price their products accordingly. They just really "don't have a clue".

He just got a bug up his ars, I guess. I talked to him Friday and he's going back to PT5 and OS9.
Kurt,
That's pretty funny. They're getting as bad as microsoft. So, are they delusional, bloated or just greedy?

PT6 isn't ready for prime time, especially the TDM systems. Probably take about 6 months for all the plugins to be in place.
I also own DP3, Cubase5 and Logic5.5.
Logic is sweet under OSX. I will be upgrading to DP4 & Logic6 this summer.
Mitchell, the only PC software app that comes close to Final Cut Pro, is Avid DV Express. Avid Express retails for more and cannot do film resolution. I own both.
Kurt, I am attempting to get an audio/video job at Microsoft. My wife who is a Microsoft employee arranged a contact and tour of the Microsoft Studios group.
One of the best kept secrets is how many Mac are on the Microsoft campus. The jobs required knowledge of Mac-based Pro Tools TDM systems (Microsoft has over a dozen TDM systems), for video Mac based Avid systems, or the Unix Quantel systems.
After the tour I bought my first Mac, and began taking classes for multimedia.
I own both platforms, from my experience it's a small investment for the doors it opens.
As capable an app that Sonar is, I've yet to see any job openings that require Sonar experience.
;)
The reason for OSX only booting machines, are the 64bit machines that Apple will launch before the end of the year.

Well... if these numbers are correct (in which they can only be close) the G5 970's are going to take OS X to another level. http://www.macbidouille.com/niouzcontenu.php?date=2003-05-05#5440

Tried to learn Basic years ago. Quickly lost interest.
DOS reminded me of basic, but more complicated. Still no interest.
Windows was easier when it worked, until you waded in to the deep water where it became a murky, cryptic mess. Still no interest.
Got into old Macs about 4 years ago. Love OS9.
Jaguar sure is purty, but it's kinda slow and has all that scary command-line shit that I hate underneath it.
Now what the hell am I gonna do? :s:
